Developed under the watchful eye of legendary Porsche engineer Roland Kussmaul, the Type 964 Cup was introduced in 1989 and was based around the newly launched 964 Carrera model. Extensive lightening saw almost a quarter of a tonne pared from the standard car, whilst a modest power increase was achieved thanks to a blueprinted engine, a Cup specific ECU, lightened flywheel and racing clutch.
This particular car was one of the initial production run of 50 examples manufactured for the inaugural 1990 Carrera Cup race season. Originally delivered to Swedish Porsche aficionado Lasse Jönsson, the car was leased to his fellow countryman Joakim Birgerson for the 1990 German Porsche Carrera Cup season, and was entered under the auspices of Birgerson’s Projekt Formel Racing team. The 10-round championship visited historic tracks which included Avus, Norisring, Spa-Francorchamps and Nürburgring, and Birgerson ended the season joint 14th in the points standings – a respectable result for a privateer, given that the opposition in 1990 included drivers of the calibre of Olaf Manthey, Roland Asch, Wolfgang Land and Jurgen Von Gartzen.
The following year, the Wagenpass shows the car as having been driven by “Pehrson” – possibly Lennart Pehrsson, sometime Swedish GT competitor and Porsche 993 GT2 pilot – at Hockenheim and the Nürburgring, although unfortunately it has not been possible to trace results for these events.
In 1993 the car was sold to Örnulf Wirdheim, father of former Jaguar Racing test driver and 2003 International Formula 3000 Champion Björn. Wirdheim Sr. appears to have competed in only one race in the car.
The car was then sold to Mikael Gustavsson a highly respected Swedish driver – having finished runner-up in the Swedish Formula 3 Championship on three separate occasions (to J.J. Lehto, Mika Hakkinen and Mika Salo, no less) and a former Works Konrad driver who raced at the 24 Hours of Daytona. Mikael embarked upon a high profile sports car career which included using this car to dominate the 1994 Swedish Porsche Cup.
The car was then dry stored for a number of years in a Swedish museum and was recommissioned by Mikael in 2018 (recommissioning works included a precautionary engine rebuild) whereupon it was bought by the current owner.
Following acquisition the current owner audited the car and undertook a sympathetic external cosmetic restoration to include a concours standard glass-out repaint in Grand Prix white which presents the car beautifully whilst keeping the race patina of both the cabin interior and the internal panels of the car intact. Subsequently the car has been shown and driven at a number of PCGB days and is now fully run-in, freshly serviced and ready to enjoy or display.
The current owner has also sourced the complete team racing history and a wealth of supporting documentation including a set of original period photographs recording the day’s racing at Avus on 6th May 1990.
The car is presented in the livery it carried in 1990. If the new owner preferred, it would be a simple task to return to the base 1990 sponsorship pack as displayed in the Wagenpass or to body in white. The decals are period correct multi-layer graphics.
Remarkably preserved and very original, the car retains its original shell, Matter roll cage (correctly dated February 1990) and engine, and it is believed that the odometer reading of 24,500 km is genuine.
UK road registered since 2018 the car is accompanied by a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, its original Wagenpass, Porsche manuals (including service book and cup supplement), period Swedish registration documents, complete 1990 race team history running to two volumes, an original 1990 Carrera Cup paddock pass and the rarely seen Weissach production traveller confirming the VIN/Shell No combination.
The car is currently running on the correct offset 1990 Cup wheels (8”Fr/9.5”Rear) and is fitted with new Recaro SPG seats, Schroth harnesses and a GT3 Cup steering wheel. An original correctly dated 1990 Recaro Porsche Cup seat in excellent condition will be supplied with the car.
This represents a rare opportunity to acquire a highly original and well-documented example of this increasingly sought-after model from the first year of Carrera Cup racing with impeccable provenance backed up by an unprecedented level of period documentation.
